Why do I see both Office Timeline and Lucen Timeline?

This article covers the Lucen Timeline add-in for PowerPoint on Windows. Using the browser-based app instead? See Lucen Timeline Online help.

Overview

After a recent update you may notice two tabs in the PowerPoint ribbon: one labeled Office Timeline and one labeled Lucen Timeline. They are the same product. Office Timeline is now Lucen Timeline, and you only need the Lucen Timeline tab. This article explains why both appear and how to remove the old one.

Why this happens

Office Timeline was renamed Lucen Timeline. The update installs the newly branded Lucen Timeline add-in, but the earlier Office Timeline install can remain on your machine. PowerPoint then loads both, so you see two tabs. Removing the old Office Timeline add-in clears it up.

Your work is safe. Both tabs edit the same native PowerPoint shapes, so removing the old Office Timeline add-in does not change or delete any timelines already in your slides.

Remove the old Office Timeline add-in

  1. Close PowerPoint.

  2. Open Windows Settings (press the Windows key, type Settings, and open it, or press Windows + I).

  3. Go to Apps, then Apps & features (Windows 10) or Installed apps (Windows 11).

  4. In the list, find Office Timeline, the older entry, not Lucen Timeline.

  5. Select it, choose Uninstall, and confirm.

  6. Reopen PowerPoint. Only the Lucen Timeline tab should remain.

Remove only the entry named Office Timeline. Leave Lucen Timeline installed, that is the current product. If you do not see an Office Timeline entry, you are already on Lucen Timeline only and no action is needed.

Still seeing both?

  • PowerPoint was still open during the uninstall.

Fully close it, check the system tray and Task Manager, then uninstall again.

  • The old add-in will not uninstall or keeps coming back.

Use Microsoft's Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter to remove the stuck entry.

  • You want the other removal methods.

See How to Uninstall Lucen Timeline for the Start menu and Control Panel options and the troubleshooter link.
