Common issues when updating (Timeline Add-in)

Welcome to Lucen Timeline Add-in Help. Looking for support for the browser-based web app? [Click here]

Overview

When updating from an older version of Lucen Timeline to the latest build, the installation may fail to complete.

Most update issues are related to differences between older VSTO-based versions and the current NetOffice-based version, or to PowerPoint add-in settings.

Additionally, installation issues may also arise when attempting to install an older build over a newer build or when enterprise Software Center settings block the installation of certain versions.

Symptoms

After updating to the latest version of Lucen Timeline, you may experience one of the following:

  • Lucen Timeline is no longer visible in PowerPoint

  • You receive an error related to an older VSTO-based installer

  • You receive an Error 1001 message when uninstalling or upgrading

  • Installation fails when attempting to install an older build on a machine with a newer version installed

  • Software Center (enterprise) incorrectly shows an older build as already installed, blocking installation

Solution

  1. If Lucen Timeline is not visible in PowerPoint after updating:

    • Restart PowerPoint

    • Go to File → Options → Add-ins

    • Select COM Add-ins → Go

    • Ensure "Lucen Timeline" is enabled

  2. If you receive a Visual Studio Tools for Lucen (VSTO) error during installation, you are likely using an older installer. Download and run the latest version of Lucen Timeline from: https://www.lucensoftware.com/products/timeline/updates

  3. If you receive Error 1001, the previous version may not have been removed correctly. Uninstall the older version of Timeline, then install the latest build. See how here.

To install an older build of Timeline:

  • Uninstall the currently installed newer version (e.g., build 14.22) from your machine.

  • Once uninstalled, proceed to install the older build (e.g., build 13.25).

If the Software Center prevents installation by incorrectly showing the older build as already installed:

  • Download the installer for the desired build directly from the official source (e.g., build 13.25.1).

  • Run the installer to complete the installation process.

Note: Always ensure you have the correct permissions to install or uninstall software on your machine. If issues persist, contact your IT administrator or the Timeline support team for further assistance.
