Import error: “To import this Project file, save it in the Gantt Chart view first” (Timeline Add-in)

This article covers the Lucen Timeline add-in for PowerPoint on Windows. Using the browser-based app instead? See Lucen Timeline Online help.

Symptoms

When trying to import a Microsoft Project file into Lucen Timeline, you get an error message that says, “To import this Project file, save it in the Gantt Chart view first.”

Overview

To be able to import your .mpp file, Timeline needs pull your task and milestone data from Project. When you save your Project file in any other view than Gantt Chart, the add-in can’t access that data. That’s why you’re asked to save your file in the Gantt Chart view first to be able to import it.

Steps

  1. Open the Project file you were trying to import locate the View section in the Task tab.

  2. There, open the dropdown menu and select Gantt chart.

  3. Save and close your Project file.

  4. Go back to Timeline in PowerPoint and start the import again.
